Straw Wattles are
installed as a physical
barrier to protect
water courses and
drainage systems
from sediment pollution. |

There are typically two methods for installing straw wattles, soft ground or hard standing.
Soft Ground Installation.
Wattles should be installed in a 50-75 mm deep trench and be secured to the ground by wooden
stakes spaced approximately every 1.2 m along the length of the wattle.
Stakes, approximately 25mm x 25mm shall be driven through the centre of the wattle and into the
ground, to a depth of between 150 - 300mm dependant on ground type.
The stake should have approximately 50mm exposed above the wattle
In all cases due consideration should be given to anticipated volume and direction of water flow
and further stakes may be placed as necessary.
Hard Standing Installation.
Wattles should be installed with the use of sandbags placed within 150mm of each end of the wattle
and then placed approximately every metre.
In all cases due consideration should be given to anticipated volume and direction of water flow
and further sandbags may be placed as necessary. |
